Ateneo de Manila University clinched the top spot after overcoming Far Eastern University, 68-64, in overtime of their University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament clash on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Blue Eagles turned around what seemed to be a one sided game for the Tamaraws with a commanding fourth quarter performance, producing 33 points while limiting FEU to just 14. Ateneo had to climb a 19-point deficit after producing only 26 points in the first three quarters, while FEU had 45.
Both teams had the chance to close the game in the fourth quarter. Mike Tolomia missed two free throws with 2.8 seconds left, while Kiefer Ravena missed his three pointer with 1.2 seconds left in the game.
Kiefer Ravena woke up in the second half to produce 17 of his 23 points to lead the Blue Eagles. Mark Belo led the Tamaraws with 16 points.
Ateneo enters the Final Four on top of the rankings with an 11-3 won-lost record, while FEU falls to second with a 10-4 mark and faces De La Salle in a virtual best-of-three showdown in the Final Four.
