“Cagayan (Valley) is on Cloud Nine,” exclaimed Lady Rising Suns team captain Ange Tabaquero.
And their team has every right to be on a high, as Cagayan Valley claimed the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 Open Conference title over Smart-Maynilad in a series sweep to become the only team in league history to go unbeaten on their way to the crown.
Just like in Game 1, the Lady Rising Suns had to survive a thrilling five-setter to end their series against the talented Net Spikers.
The tournament’s best setter Phomia Soraya was rewarded for her efforts as the Finals MVP.
Leading for Cagayan Valley was the league’s best scorer Kannika Thipachot with 24 points, followed by Tabaquero with 18.
“Today, we treated this game like there was no tomorrow,” added Tabaquero in Filipino, who won her first Open Conference title as the skipper. “We’re so overjoyed that this (tournament) is over.”
Cagayan Valley went off to rousing 7-1 start to the opening set, en route to a 25-16 win. But despite a quick 5-1 start to the second set, the Net Spikers claimed the next frame by a 25-19 scoreline.
Despite a dominant 25-15 finish to the third set, Smart-Maynilad caught the breaks of the game late in the fourth set to claim a 25-22 win.
In the final frame, the Lady Rising Suns finally closed out the match in a rousing 15-7 finish.
Last minute addition Dindin Santiago led all scorers with 26, followed by 13 points apiece from Lithawat Kesinee and Alyssa Valdez.
