Garvo Lanete scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in San Beda’s close 70-68 victory over De La Salle in a crucial match that would perhaps determine their fate in the 2011 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.
Down by just one after a pair of crucial misses at the foul line by lefty Green Archer Maui Villanueva, Garvo Lanete buried a trey from the right wing over LA Revilla to give San Beda a slim two point lead with only 3.3 seconds left.
In the insuing play off the timeout, Revilla fumbled the ball amidst the tight Red Lion defense to secure the victory for the red shirts from Mendiola.
Almond Vosotros turned in another great performance with 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Joseph Marata found his form in the fourth period for 12 of his game total of 14 points in a losing effort.
With the loss, La Salle is now in a must-win situation in their last two games against Lyceum and Ateneo, while hoping for losses by San Beda or Santo Tomas in their last games.
Mapua solidifies their bid for one of the four quarterfinals slots in Group B via a 88-74 victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College. Fil-Palestinian big man Yousef Taha had 16 points to go along with 13 rebounds, while Kenneth Ighalo and Jason Pascual each added 11 to their cause.
The Cardinals, now with a 4-3 slate, should win their last game against University of the Philippines to eliminate University of the East from contention.
In the other seniors game, Far Eastern University close out their elimination round campaign undefeated by disposing Letran, 72-56. Pipo Noundou and Terrence Romeo each chipped in 15 points, while RR Garcia added 11 points.
In the juniors games, San Sebastian manhandled the Pilipinas U13 squad via a 95-35 rout. Mansueto Velasco Jr. topped all Staglets with 16 points, while three others (Loyd Castor, Michael Calisaan and Ryan Costelo) each had 10 points apiece.
Meanwhile, Adamson easily disposed of Perpetual, 67-46, in the other juniors match. William Polican and Arwin Margallo topped all scorers with 14 points apiece.
