Bouncing back from a devastating end game loss against National University, the Adamson Falcons broke De La Salle University’s three-game winning streak in a 66-58 result in Saturday’s featured match in the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball double header at the Araneta Coliseum.
“I think this is my luckiest day.” Said Adamson coach Leo Austria of the win. “Parang early Christmas gift.” He was proud of the hard work his boys put in and stressed, “They did not give up kahit nagrally pa La Salle. Ayaw nila give up yung lamang.”
He also commended their defense, saying “Pag maganda yung defense mo, malapit sa swerte.”
The Archers tried in vain to catch up to the Falcons all throughout game, but Adamson always seemed to break away when it mattered.
Lester Alvarez topped the scoreboards for Adamson with 18 points. Janus Lozada and Alex Nuyles combined for 26 points, while Eric Camson went double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Norbert Torres led the scoring for the Archers with 14 points. Yutien Andrada had 11 points and 9 rebounds while Joseph Marata had 9 points.
Starting from the first quarter, Lady luck was smiling down on the Falcons as they enjoyed an early 21-13 lead.
Nuyles and Camson were the only ones scoring for the Falcons throughout the second quarter, while it was more evenly distributed among the green and white. Despite this, La Salle was outscored 14-10 and at halftime Adamson remained ahead, 35-23.
The Archers rallied to make a comeback, with Andrada contributing 10 out of the 12 points four minutes into the third quarter. However things went from bad to worse as a series of questionable calls were made. After five consecutive fouls, a personal foul was called on Luigi dela Paz despite being hit in the face by Allen Etrone’s elbow. Etrone was eventually issued a technical foul, but so was the La Salle bench.
The fourth quarter didn’t fare any better. La Salle just couldn’t catch a break. Missed lay-ups and Adamson’s defense severely limited their scoring. Three players fouled out in the fourth quarter – Manyara and Brondial for Adamson and Atkins for La Salle.
Despite showing progress in their previous games, La Salle’satrocious freethrow shooting again reared its ugly head as they only made nine out of 23. La Salle was also one out of ten from beyond the arc the lone shot coming from Norbert Torres, probably known for his ill-advised 3-point attempts in the game against Ateneo where he missed every single one.
La Salle has not won a game against Adamson in the UAAP since the first round of Season 72, where the Green Archers took that game back in July 26, 2009 by a count of 64-63.
