What was initially seen as a battle of two super rookies, it quickly turned into a lopsided showdown.
Ateneo de Manila University extended their winning run on Thursday with a complete demolition of a hapless and experimenting National University squad with a 86-62 scoreline in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
Owing to a great second and third period, where the Bulldogs were badly outscored 22-9 and 31-17 respectively, the Blue Eagles averaged above 50 percent from the field in that span of time, where they buried five devastating treys in the third that put the game way out of reach.
In the game, the Blue Eagles moved the ball very well, tying a UAAP record of 30 assists as a team. The last time this occured was back in July 28, 2005, when Far Eastern University tallied the same number also against NU.
NU rookie standout Bobby Ray Parks struggled to get through the suffocating Ateneo defense, managing to only score a low of 8 points through the first three frames, but finished with a total of 20 points. Joshua Alolino added 11 points, while Emmanuel Mbe totalled for 10 points while being sadded by foul trouble during the entire contest.
Parks’ counterpart from the the Katipunan five, Kiefer Ravena, finished with 13 points. Big man Greg Slaughter muscled his way for 15 points and 7 rebounds. Nico Salva put up 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Kirk Long quietly dealt damage by tallying 11 points and 7 assists.
The three-time defending champions remain unbeaten after three contests and has recorded their seventh double-digit victory over the Bulldogs since losing to them in the second round of the 70th season. Meanwhile, the young and feisty squad from the other side of Sampaloc suffer their second setback in three outings.
Up next will be the Red Warriors for Ateneo on Saturday at 1:00 pm, while National University takes on Far Eastern University on Sunday.
