Archer Paul Marton de la Cruz snatched the country’s second bronze medal in the men’s compound archery competition Saturday in Gyeyang Archery Field in Incheon.
De la Cruz recovered from a subpar second end to nip Malaysian Muhammad Zaki Bin Mahazan, 140-139, for the Philippines’ first medal performance in archery after suffering from a heartbreaking bronze medal match loss against Iran in the men’s compound team.
De la Cruz was consistent in the third and fourth end, scoring a total of four bull’s eyes as compared to Mahazan’s three.
That one bulls’ eye advantage was the difference maker for de la Cruz.
De la Cruz earlier bowed down to Iranian Esmaeli Ebadi in the semifinals, 140-146.
With de la Cruz’s bronze, the Philippines are now at 24th place in the medal standings with two silvers and two bronzes. It is also the first medal for the country outside of wushu.
On the other hand, the Philippine men’s compound failed to close out their bronze medal match, slipping in the fourth end after scoring a perfect 60 points in the third end to miss the medal against Iran composed of Ebadi, Majid Gheidi, and Amir Kazempour.
The team composed of Dela Cruz, Earl Benjamin Yap, and Ian Patrick Chipeco faltered in the fourth end after holding a precarious 171-170 lead after three, scoring only 53 points, which include two arrows on the target’s red area while the Iranians scored 57 points with four bull’s eyes.
