Four Filipino boxers are assured of medal finishes in the 2014 Asian Games, boosting the country’s stock in what seemed to be a forgettable stint overall.

Tuesday started for the boxing team when bantamweight Mario Fernandez won a convincing unanimous decision in his quarterfinal bout versus Indian Shiva Thapa at the Seonhak Gymnasium in Incheon.

Two judges scored the bout at 30-28 while one judge saw it at 29-28 in favor of the Filipino.

Fernandez is awaiting the winner of the bout between Omurbek Malabekov of Kyrgyzstan and 2010 Asian Games silver medalist Zhang Jiawei of China.

Following the bout was the tiff between 2012 Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, who outpunched Hasanboy Dushmatov of Uzbekistan but eked out only a split decision to advance in the medal round of the light flyweight division.

Two judges from Italy and Canada saw the fight at 29-28 for Barriga but a South Korean judge favored the Uzbek, 28-29.

Barriga will next face Shin Jong Hun of South Korea, a silver medalist in the 2011 AIBA World Championship.

The day ended with a bang as middleweight Wilfredo Lopez made mincemeat out of Shinebayar Narmandakh of Mongolia with a technical knockout at the 2:05 mark of the first round to arrange a duel with Odai Riyad Adel Al-Hindawi of Jordan in the semifinals.

Fernandez, Barriga, and Lopez joined lightweight Charly Suarez as the sure medal hopefuls for the Philippines.

Two Filipino netters however failed to duplicate the feats of the boxers.

Joseph Arcilla and Noelle Zoleta failed to advance in the semifinals, dropping their respective quarterfinals match in soft tennis.

Arcilla bowed down to Edi Kusdaryanto of Indonesia, one game to four while Zoleta dropped three straight games against Zhong Yi of China after snatching games two and three, losing at 2-4.
