When the UP Pep Squad entered the court for their halftime performance with colored towels at hand, the audience at the Smart-Araneta coliseum on November 4 were puzzled on what the 9-time Cheerdance champions have in store.
Some in the crowd murmured, others mocked the towels; “maghihilamos ata sila.”
Then the Pep Squad ng Bayan danced around the court flipping, wrapping, and sometimes wearing their individual towels.
The routine finished. Towels were folded. Some got it, many didn’t.
“It’s a contemporary dance about queer”, explained coach Pio Opinaldo. “Para sa isang tao, ‘yung kinukuwestiyon niya yung sexuality niya.”
The towels “symbolize vulnerability and malleability, in a way that it can be manipulated (changed) on a day-to-day basis” explained captain Cam Lagmay.’
According to Opinaldo, the piece is an excerpt of the UP Pep Squad’s concert held a year ago, and an extension of their “Pantay pantay” Cheerdance Competition routine in 2014.
