Thanks to a tandem of great performances from veteran guard Allan Mangahas and sweet shooting Fil-foreign rookie Josan Nimes, Mapua Institute of Technology outlasted a shorthanded College of Saint Benilde in the continuation of the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

The Cardinals took home an all-important 94-90 victory in a match that needed an extra five minutes to decide. Mangahas, the former PCU Baby Dolphin, racked up 23 points with 8 rebounds and 6 assists. The Australian-born Nimes, on the other hand, put up a career-high of 25 points in the process.

Benilde, already missing the services of big man Jan Tan, who served a one-game suspension for the flagrant foul (Penalty 2) he incurred during their first round ending match against Emilio Aguinaldo College, hit another snag as they lost Carlo Lastimosa and Anton Altamirano due to separate injuries incurred during the extra session.

Lastimosa, who was heralded as last year’s Rookie of the Year, suffered a badly sprained left ankle with 1:34 remaining in the game. He finished with 23 points to lead all Blazers in scoring. Meanwhile, Altamirano suffered what appears to be a hyper-extended left shoulder on a pick set by Mapua’s Mark Sarangay.

Both players have been placed on the injured list and are listed as day-to-day, according to head coach Richard del Rosario.

Rookie two-guard Jonathan Grey added 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Paolo Taha contributed 19 and Mark Romero topped off with 14 points in a losing cause for CSB.

The Intramuros-based Cards now forges a tie with the Taft-based Blazers with equal 4-6 records.

Mapua’s neighbors from the other side of the walled city, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, swept through their season series Arellano University following a 66-50 cakewalk in the first seniors match of the day.

Despite playing under the weather due to the flu, guard Kevin Alas poured 17 points and 7 rebounds to his name. Jam Cortes contributed 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Kevin Racal added 11 points to the cause.

The Knights now seize control of third place with a stellar 8-2 record, at the same time arresting Arellano’s two game win streak in the process.
