Ateneo de Manila University finished the first round of eliminations with a clean sweep after winning a rematch of last year’s University Athletic Association of the Philippines finals on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Blue Eagles thrashed Far Eastern University by 20 points, 69-49, in the day’s main matchup to keep their slate clean after seven games.
Highly-rated recruit Kiefer Ravena tallied a near double-double output with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Backcourt partner Greg Slaughter had 15 points and a team-high of 11 rebounds, while Nico Salva added 10 points.
But like many games this season, this one did not finish without controversy. A landslide of calls against FEU changed the complexion of the match, one which the Morayta five would never recover from.
Down by 12 after three periods, the Tams made a fourth quarter surge to cut down their deficit to just nine. Then, last year’s rookie of the year Terrence Romeo was called for a “phantom” foul which was quickly compounded by a technical foul for “pointing an accusing finger at a referee.”
In disgust, head coach Bert Flores gave a piece of his mind to the officials and was then soon whistled for a technical foul of his own for “excessive complaining.”
As a result, Emman Monfort was awarded four foul shots and made three to revert their lead back to 12. Then, two treys by Kirk Long and a pair of foul shots made by Slaughter off an unsportsmanlike foul from Russel Escoto effectively doomed the Tamaraws’ cause.
RR Garcia was the only double-digit scorer with 15, followed by Terrence Romeo and Escoto who both registered 8 points apiece. JR Cawaling made his return during the contest but had to go back to the sick bay after re-injuring his right knee in a box-out play with Bacon Austria late in the first half.
FEU, who notably missed the services of big man Mark Bringas after getting ejected in their last contest against UP, have now slid down to third place to end the eliminations at 4-3.
