Following a devastating 72-71 loss in the first round against University of the East, National University bounced back and soundly defeated them in their second round match-up, 91-51, to open their second round campaign in the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball wars at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

“Our mindset coming into the second round is to play it one game at a time… We were relentless,” said Bulldogs mentor Eric Altramirano. “We never let up. Maybe that’s why we beat them by 40 points.”

Altamirano was all praises for Cameroonian import Emmanuel Mbe, who topped the leaderboard with season highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds. “Mbe scored big for us. He did his job sa rebounds.”

Bobby Parks contributed 18 points to the Bulldogs while Dennice Villamor, Jeoffrey Javillonar and Joseph Terso all scored 10 each.

NU took control of the game early on, leading in the first quarter, 20-14. Things started picking up for them in the second quarter as they outscored UE, 20-6. At half time, the Bulldogs were leading, 40-29.

While scoring improved considerably for UE in the third quarter, NU still had an advantage over them at 18-29. The quarter ended at 69-38.

NU enjoyed their biggest lead with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter, 88-44. UE eventually managed to bring it down to 40 at the end of the period.

UE really struggled with offensively, shooting only 8.7% from the three-point line and making 35.8% of their 2-point field goals. NU on the other hand, was 47.1% from the 3-point line and made 52.5% of their 2-point field goals.

The Warriors also experienced foul trouble, getting 28 compared to NU’s 13. The Bulldogs were able to convert penalties into 25 points, with UE making only 7.

Lord Casajeros put up the most points with 8. Adrian Santos contributed 7, while BJ Zosa and Chris Javier each had 6 points for the Red Warriors.
