University of the East finally avoided the ominous tag of losing all of their first round games with a timely victory over National University in the continuation of the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines basketball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Red Warriors scored a close 72-71 upset down the wire against the Bulldogs to end their first round campaign to avoid duplicating University of the Philippines’ ominous feat last year of failing to tally a single victory in a 14-game season.
Paul Zamar, one of the few veterans remaining from the 2009 squad that made it all the way to the conference finals, finished with 20 points and 5 rebounds for the Red Warriors. Biboy Enguio added 19 points, while Roi Sumang tallied 10 points and 6 assists.
Despite the victory, the Recto-based squad remain dead last after the first round of eliminations with a 1-6 card, just half a game behind the Bulldogs who finish the first seven games with a 2-5 mark.
Bobby Ray Parks amounted for 23 points, Choi Ignacio chipped in 16, while Emmanuel Mbe totalled for 13 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds in the loss.
Meanwhile, Adamson University scored an all-important victory over De La Salle University, 66-58, in a match that was marred by sloppy officiating and questionable calls.
Lester Alvarez scored 18 points, with Janus Lozada and Alex Nuyles topping off the scoring leaders with 14 and 12 apiece for the Soaring Falcons, who have now tied Far Eastern University with equal 4-2 marks and could gain solo second by the end of the first round.
The Green Archers had the game close through the two minute warning, but Lozada luckily made a 30 foot bank shot from the right arc to double their lead to six.
Though the Taft-based five managed to make stops in the final minute, Joseph Marata, LA Revilla and Norbert Torres muffed three close range shots in the final stretch.
The former RP Youth member Torres put up 14 points to lead La Salle, who have now lost their fourth straight contest against their fine feathered foes from San Marcelino, falling to an even 3-3 card entering their final game against University of Santo Tomas.
