After barging into the semis for an undefeated run in Day 1, University of the Philippines Diliman defeated co-top seed Ateneo de Manila University to bag the title spot in the 1st University Frixbee Championship.

Strong rains and an extremely wet and muddy pitch did not stop the Katipunan neighbors and nine other teams from showing the best disc handling they could in Day 2 at the UP Sunken Garden.

“It’s fun to see teams playing in the mud and not caring about the mess at all,” said Carlos Marin, team captain of the UP alliance that beat the Blue Ninjas 15-8.

In their after-game huddle, Marin said that both teams’ performance in the final round “was definitely not our best with this field condition,” but gave props to the Ateneo squad for being “the strongest team we faced.”

Ateneo team captain Lyra Dietrich was proud with her team’s performance despite being just one month old.

“We’re still in the process of getting there,” said Dietrich.

University of Santo Tomas defeated De La Salle University 7-5 after equalizing with the Lasallians two minutes before endgame.

The Thomasian team failed to overtake Ateneo in the semis after cutting the latter’s lead by one, and went straight to face the Taft-based squad to battle for 3rd place.

“We just wanted to grab the experience and play competitive ultimate,” said UST team captain Jeff Loveranes. “But like all competing teams, we wanted to be champions.

As the first inter-collegiate event for the sport, University Frixbee Championship was a venue for university-based players to know one another.

“In future competitions, more or less, kami-kami rin ang maglalaban (we’ll run into and face each other),” said Marin, who was glad that eleven teams participated in the tournament.
