Reigning floor exercise world champion Carlos Yulo miserably flopped and dropped in his pet gymnastics event but to his surprise, his Olympic dream is still alive as he enters the vault finals by placing sixth in men’s artistic gymnastics Satuday at the Ariake Gymnastics Center in Tokyo.

It was a pleasant surprise for Yulo as he scored 14.712 points in an event that he still had to win internationally.

For the floor exercise, Yulo scored only 13.566 points and is good for 44th place, as the highly-touted champion crashed on his first salto.

Yulo’s vault routine was surprisingly flawless though.

Vault specialist Shin Jae-Hwan of South Korea topped the vault qualifiers 14.866 points. Two Russians, two Turks, one Armenian, and one Brazilian have also qualified in the finals set on August 2.

Yulo is the dark horse among the final eight as he failed to qualify in the vault event of the 2019 World Championships.

His best achievement in vault is a silver medal in both the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and the Baku leg of the 2018 World Cup Series.

Yulo placed 47th overall and his next highest scoring event was in the rings, with 14 points, good for 22nd place.
