Ateneo de Manila University and University of the East notched victories to end their respective UAAP Season 76 first round campaigns on a high note at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
The Blue Eagles, who have been struggling to gain ground this season under a rebuilding program, earned their third win at the expense of University of Santo Tomas, 61-57, in a rematch of last year’s title showdown.
“At the end of the day, there was the willingness to defend against a tough team like UST that made the difference there,” said Ateneo head coach Bo Perasol. “They really work hard, making sure the little things are being done.”
Kiefer Ravena scored 13 points with eight rebounds, while Chris Newsome added 10 points and nine boards.
Despite the win, the Blue Eagles momentarily maintain sole possesion of seventh place at 3-4, a half-game behind the three-way logjam of De La Salle University, National University and Adamson University for fourth place.
Aljon Mariano tallied 16 points and nine rebounds in a losing cause for Santo Tomas.
In the first game, University of the Philippines continue their skid at the bottom of the heap, losing by a close margin against the resurgent Red Warriors, 62-57.
Charles Mammie posted a monster output of 17 points and 22 rebounds, while Roi Sumang made headway in the backcourt with 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Following the game, UE Coach Boycie Zamar had a mixed reaction in regards to how his wards won the game.
“Hindi (ako satisfied), kasi you cannot underestimate them (UP) at all. (Satisfied) because they needed this game,” opined Zamar, who took over the team during the middle of Season 75 from former coach Jerry Codiñera.
“There is no microwave success,” added the veteran UE mentor.
The win boosts the Red Warriors’ record to 4-3, gaining a tie for second place with UST.
For the winless Maroons, a returning Raul Soyud, together with Mo Gingerich and JR Gallarza each posted 10 points.
