The University of the Philippines men’s volleyball team (UPMVT) appealed Tuesday for monetary donations to aid its athletes in the upcoming UAAP season 75.

Team captain Dominico Lucindo, in a Facebook note, cited the financial woes of the varsity team, which include sourcing plane tickets, uniforms and food expenses from their own pockets.

“There is no regular bus service for the team. Most of the time, team members take jeeps, buses, pedicabs and tricycles on their way to each UAAP game,” he said, adding that they also lack athletic gears and supplies.

According to Lucindo, the College of Human Kinetics which houses the varsity teams of the state university, does not receive adequate financing from the national government to support operation of its sporting activities.

“The UPMVT is appealing to generous individuals, companies and institutions to assist the team in fulfilling its task to representing the University of the Philippines with the best of its abilities as varsity athletes,” the captain said.

Before its sixth place finish in season 74, the team consistently ended in the top four of the men’s volleyball competition since season 65.

The UPMVT also has four championship titles under their belt and 13 final four appearances since the format has been instituted in the UAAP in the 1993-1994 season.
