Ateneo de Manila University continues to raise the bar, as they demolished University of Santo Tomas in an 82-57 blowout to propel forward their second round campaign in the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tourney at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
The Blue Eagles, who just earned their sweet spot at the final four playoff, managed to double their first quarter nine point lead to 18 against haphazardly-playing Growling Tigers just at the second quarter.
By the end of the third quarter and an eternity of basketball remaining, the Katipunan-based team dominated with a 31 point advantage and would never look back.
More known for his defensive-minded strategies, Ateneo head coach Norman Black now wants his wards to now put a smoother and stronger flow for their offense.
“I challenged my players to play more like a team,” said the multi-titled mentor. “That’s why I called out more team plays in the first quarter.”
Being able to field 16 players in court, the Blue Eagles were led by Nico Salva’s 20 points and seven rebounds. Justin Chua and Kiefer Ravena also managed to scored double digits for the team at 18 and 14, respectively.
The tamed Tigers ricocheted with 20 points at the final quarter versus the Eagles’ 14 but failed to slim down the lead of the latter.
Jeric Teng managed 20 points and 4 assists for UST while Karim Abdul contributed a staggering 19 rebounds on the game.
With 4 wins and 7 losses under their belt, the España team will try to get even against a reeling De La Salle University five in a season-deciding matchup on Thursday.
Ateneo, on the other hand, looks to net their 10th straight win against a young and raring University of the East in the afternoon matineé on the same playing date.
