TO THE LEFT: La Salle southpaws pummel State U to tie series

La Salle’s lefties stymied the University of the Philippines’ vaunted defense, tying the UAAP men’s basketball finals, 82-70, in Game Two on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Francis Escandor, CJ Austria, Mark Nonoy, and JC Macalalag combined for 40 points off eight triples to lead the Green Archers’ offensive spread, which was previously concentrated on Mike Phillips in Game One.

Usual King Archers Phillips, newly-minted Most Valuable Player Kevin Quiambao, and Mythical Five member Evan Nelle lied low on their glamorous lows, playing utility roles throughout the game.

The trio combined only for 22 points but hauled 38 boards, 12 assists, six steals, and five blocks.

The Green Archers capitalized on their superb defense from quarters two to four, allowing only 33 points to the Fighting Maroons after conceding 27 in the opening canto.
