De La Salle University took advantage of the University of Santo Tomas’ (UST) decimated defense line and hosted a goal party, 7-0, on Saturday’s UAAP women’s football second round at the University of the Philippines Football Stadium.
Rookie center forward Angelica Teves scored the first hat-trick of Season 85 in women’s play as four others joined the scoring spree for the Lady Archers.
“No mercy—iyan ang instruction samin ni coach,” Teves said after the game, pointing out the need to accumulate a higher goal difference in the five-team, eight-game elimination phase.
There is no final four in the women’s tournament as the top two teams by the end of eliminations will go straight to the final.
Left back Samantha Toledo struck the opener in the 23rd minute off a loose ball from a botched Teves strike.
Six minutes later, Tigress striker Lovely Fernandez had a strong shot from top right of the box for an equalizer but was blocked by team captain Anna Delos Reyes.
Injuries then plagued UST’s defense as fullback Jannah Santerva and holding midfielder Jerelyn Danao had to be stretchered out midway in the first half due to leg injuries.
The Lady Archers seized the moment as right winger Maria Layacan goaled off a rebound of her own miss in the first half stoppage time to pad La Salle’s lead.
Teves had her first goal in the 52nd minute with an onside solo run past UST’s defense.
She then issued a short assist from center-front for a left strike from Arantxa Trebol in the 63rd minute.
Ten minutes later, Teves scored her brace from front center off a right cross from Layacan.
In the 87th minute, national team standout Shai Del Campo finally scored her first goal of the season on her second cap, sprinting 35 yards for a running goal.
Teves capped the onslaught in the second half stoppage time with a strike from front center off a left corner inswing by Layacan.
With the hat-trick, the Negros Oriental native co-leads the season in scoring with five goals alongside UST’s Nathalie Absalon.
“La Salle must not lose to the same team twice,” said head coach Hans-Peter Smit after the game.
“I asked the girls to score more in the second half because we need to get away as far as we can from whomever by the goal difference first, and for the points, we will tackle it one game at a time,” he explained.
With the rout, La Salle jumped to second place with nine points (three wins and two losses) and a +5 goal differential advantage from Far Eastern University.
