GAMES ON TUESDAY (June 12, 2012) – The Arena in San Juan
11:30am – San Beda vs Letran (Jrs. Championship
4:00pm – National vs De La Salle (Srs. Championship)
Two teams that failed to make it to the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball final four last season make up this year’s protagonists in this year’s Filoil Flying V Pre-season Hanes Cup final on Tuesday.
De La Salle University (DLSU) knocked off San Beda College (SBC) in a nailbiter, while National University (NU) ousted defending champions Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) in the other end of the men’s semifinals twinbill on Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
The Green Archers, despite leading early on in the game, hung tough to score a 50-46 squeaker in the day’s main game. Norbert Torres strung together 12 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks in the game. LA Revilla had nine points and two steals.
But none of them made a bigger performance than Almond Vosotros, despite scoring only 7 points in the game, hit the go-ahead trey with 1:40 left in the ballgame to send the Green Archers to their first finals appearance in the tournament since the inaugural edition in 2007.
DLSU outscored the Red Lions, 12-3, in the first six minutes of the game which led to the 27-19 result at the end of the first twenty minutes.
Similar to De La Salle’s match against Ateneo, this was a very low scoring affair that limited both teams to below 35 percent from the field and the Red Lions (19-for-59, 32 percent) making more field goals than the Green Archers (17-for-52).
However, the Taft-based dribblers showed an improved percentage from the free throw line (14-for-18, 78 percent), which eventually saved their cause and brought them to the title game.
Jake Pascual and Ola Adeogun each totalled 10 points in a losing cause for San Beda.
DLSU’s opponents in the 4:00pm showdown on Tuesday, National University, took down Ateneo de Manila in an 85-68 rout. Bobby Ray Parks once again dominated the scoring column with 30 points on 12-for-17 shooting from the field.
Jeoff Javillonar added 13 points, Dennice Villamor totalled for 12, while Emmanuel Mbe had 10 points.
