In the 76th UAAP season, it’s like the men’s basketball tournament had taken a time machine and returned to the 1990s. Five-time reigning titlists Ateneo de Manila struggled all season long and missed the bus to the Final Four, then we see a revival of the greatest rivalries during that decade in the finals.

sidebar-hotwAll of this became possible due to the impressive efforts of UST’s Kevin Ferrer and De La Salle’s LA Revilla, who have been selected as Fullcourtfresh.com’s Heroes of the Week.

Ferrer, who had been struggling to find his form in his junior season with the Growling Tigers, found his groove in the right time by hitting big three pointers down the stretch, and shutting down two-time defending MVP Bobby Ray Parks on the defensive end in their epic series against National University.

The former juniors MVP tallied 18 points, including three treys in the pivotal fourth quarter stretch that buried the Bulldogs for good to lead UST in gaining the distinction as the only fourth-seeded squad to oust the top team in the UAAP Final Four.

On the other hand, Revilla battled through ankle injuries to start this season and peaked at the right time to put up stelllar offensive performances in aiding DLSU to vanquish Far Eastern University in their half of the semifinals.

Averaging only 4.3 points in the elimination round, the only remaining member of the 2008 team that last appeared in the finals averaged 17.5 points in their two matches against the Tamaraws to clinch the first seat in the Finals.
