Consolation wins: St. Benilde, Lyceum beat ousted foes

Eliminated teams De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Lyceum of the Philippines University scored consolation wins against fellow non-contenders to boost their record in Thursday’s NCAA seniors basketball doubleheader of no bearing games at the San Juan Arena.

Jonathan Grey proved to be a potent force on the court as he sizzled for 25 points and five steals in the Blazers’ 69-62 win over San Sebastian College-Recoletos.

After a tight game in the first three quarters, Grey, the NCAA All-Star MVP, scored 12 points in the fourth quarter when the Blazers stretched the lead to as much as nine points.

“I want to win our remaining games before I finish my NCAA career,” said the graduating Grey as the Blazers improved to 4-12.

The Stags were anchored once again by center Bradwyn Guinto, who tallied 19 points and 14 boards after scoring 26 points in their upsetting win over San Beda last Tuesday.

In the first game, the Pirates lorded over a decimated Emilio Aguinaldo College, 59-45.

To its credit, the Generals, playing without cornerstone Sidney Onwubere, Jeric Diego, and Raymund Pascua played a pulsating small ball game for the first three quarters, which ended at 39-38 for the Pirates.

Victor Nguidjol then exploded in the fourth quarter as the Cameroonian center-forward scored on drives and putbacks.

The Generals suffered yet another blow as big man Jefferson Mallari was thrown out for a cheap shot on Nguidjol.

Limiting the Generals to only seven points in the final canto, the Pirates went on to win their fourth game in sixteen outings.

Nguidjol led the way for the Pirates with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Francis Munsayac topscored for the Generals with 11 points.
