Playing their third straight game in three days, Ateneo de Manila University was supposed to crumble in fatigue. Strangely, it was more of the opposite.
Using a demoralizing and swift 21-4 start to the ballgame, the Blue Eagles vanquished their NCAA foes San Beda College via a 75-56 wire-to-wire rout in the championship game of the 2011 FIloil Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup on Independence Day Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
Owing mostly to the nine point outburst by tournament MVP Kiefer Ravena who finished with 12 points in the ballgame, as well as six from eventual top scoring Eagle Greg Slaughter, it was soon destined to be a long afternoon for the reigning NCAA champions.
Though the Mendiola five managed to bring down their deficit to as low as five points early in the third period, it was Kirk Long who helped keep the opposition at bay for good.
Slaughter wound up with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Juami Tiongson added 13 points. This victory marks the first time that the Blue Eagles has won the title since the tournament’s inception in 2007.
Meanwhile, Garvo Lanete led all scorers with 17 points, while Dave Marcelo added 12 and Ola Adeogun totalled for 10 points and 11 rebounds in a losing cause.
In the juniors championship, slotman Arvin Tolentino amassed a whopping 25 points and 22 rebounds in San Beda College-Taytay’s 79-70 victory over Energen Pilipinas U-16 national team.
