FIBA World Cup: PH is 21st overall, tops tournament in free throws

The Philippines officially ended up at 21st place in their first world championship stint since 1978.

Gilas were the best among the sixth-place teams in the four brackets in the preliminary stage with a quotient of 0.948 and a record of 1-4. They were ahead of Finland, South Korea, and Egypt.

Reigning FIBA Asia champions Iran are at 20th place in the tournament.

The Filipinos also made a breakthrough in the tournament as Gilas is the best team in free throw shooting at 79.6 per cent, ahead of Lithuania (77 per cent) and Spain (75.2 per cent).

Despite being the shortest in the tournament with an average height of 6’3”, the Philippines ended up fifth in rebounding with an average of 39 boards a game, 5.8 rebounds behind top rebounding team United States.

The Pinoys were also seventh in steals per game with 7.4.

Naturalized Filipino center Andray Blatche is the tournament’s best rebounder with 13.8 rebounds per game, ahead of Iran’s Hamed Haddadi, and the most efficient player with and efficiency of 22.4, ahead of Spain’s Pau Gasol.

He is second in scoring with 21.2 points per game, behind JJ Barea of Puerto Rico, and second in playing time with 33.8 minutes per game, behind Gorgui Dieng of Senegal.

Team captain Jimmy Alapag is third in free throw shooting (86.7 per cent) behind Puerto Rico’s Barea and David Huertas.
