Charly Suarez fought hard but fell short to impress two judges as he settled for the silver medal in the lightweight finals of the 2014 Asian Games at the Seonhak Gym in Incheon Friday.
His Mongolian opponent Otgondalai Dorjnyambuu eked out a split decision win over the Filipino, impressing judges Gerardo Poggi of Argentina and Albino Foti of Italy to give him a 29-28 score.
Kazakh judge Rakhymzan Rysbayev was the only judge who saw Suarez winning, giving all three rounds to him, 30-27.
Only two Filipinas remain standing for the hunt of the elusive Asiad gold medal, as taekwondo jin Kirstie Elaine Alora is set to battle Seavmey Sorn of Cambodia in the semifinals of the under-73 kilograms division while karateka Joanna Mae Ylanan battles Jou Chao of Taiwan in the under-68 kilogram category.
The Philippines is still at 22nd place with one gold, three silver, and nine bronze medals–two gold medals short of the national team’s 2010 Asiad output as of posting time.
