Good news greeted Team Philippines as boxer Charly Suarez entered the finals of the men’s lightweight boxing tournament in the 2014 Asian Games Thursday at the Seonhak Gym in Incheon.
Suarez dominated Jordanian Obada Mohammad Mustafa Al-Kasbeh and eked out a split decision to be the first Filipino pug to enter the gold medal round.
Suarez got a perfect 30-27 score from the Kazakh and Chinese judges but was deemed loser, 28-29, by a Russian judge.
He will next face Ortgondalai Dorjnyambuu of Mongolia, who whipped Japan’s Satoshi Shimizu of Japan earlier.
Three other boxers will vie for a finals slot later today.
London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga will face hometown boy Shin Jonh-hun of South Korea in the light flyweight division while Mario Fernandez will face Chinese Zhang Jiawei in the bantamweight division.
To cap off the day, knockout artist Wilfredo Lopez will fight Jordanian Odai Riyad Adel Al-Hindawi of Jordan in the middleweight division.
