2014 ASIAN GAMES: PH lady boxers bow out of contention

The Philippines’ two lady boxers fell in the hands of their oriental counterparts as the medal hopefuls for the country’s winningest Asian Games sport fell down to four Sunday.

Reigning AIBA world flyweight champion Josie Gabuco was knocked down in the first round but finished her match losing via unanimous decision versus Le Thi Bang of Vietnam at Seonhak Gymnasium.

In women’s lightweight, Nesthy Petecio likewise bowed to Chinese Yin Junhua via unanimous decision.

Their losses marked yet another losing day for Team Philippines, bowing out in contention in golf, cycling, and bowling.

Over at the Dream Park Country Club, the Philippine women’s golf team composed of SEA Games gold medalists Princess Superal, Clare Legaspi, and Pauline del Rosario placed fifth with a team score of 5-under, thirty-three strokes behind gold medalists Thailand.

Superal was the best Filipina performer individually, with four strokes under par 288 which is good for eleventh place, and fifteen strokes behind Park Gye-ol of South Korea.

Superal was erstwhile at third place in the opening round with a three-under par 72 card but subpar performances halted her rousing start in the next rounds.

Teammates Legaspi (one-under) and del Rosario (thirteen-over were at thirteenth and twenty-second place, respectively.

In the other sports, cyclist Ronald Oranza finished at thirteenth place in men’s road race behind gold medalist Jang Kyunggu of South Korea; while two Filipina women’s team in bowling trios ran out of medal contention.

The team of veterans Liza Clutario, Liza del Rosario, and Marian Posadas (3,484 points) were at eleventh place in their event while the trio of Marie Alexis Sy, Anne Marie Kiac, and Krizziah Lyn Tabora (3,427 points) were at thirteenth place.

Their outputs were miles behind gold medalists Lee Naoyung, Jung Dawun, and Son Yunhee of South Korea, who scored 3,896 points.
