Finally, Team Philippines has snatched its much-awaited gold medal in the 2014 Asian Games as Olympian Daniel Caluag topped the men’s BMX cycling raise Wednesday in Ganghwa BMX Track in Incheon.
The London veteran Caluag bested Asian rivals Masahiro Sampei of Japan by topping all three races in the one-day event.
Caluag’s brother Christopher meanwhile landed at fourth spot, barely missing the bronze medal at fourth and fifth spot in races two and three, after placing third in the first race.
Daniel Caluag was the lone Asian bet in men’s BMX in the 2012 London Olympics.
Another medal was also added in the Philippines’ account as taekwondo jin Mary Anjelay Pelaez snatched the bronze medal in women’s under-46 kilogram division.
Pelaez was outlasted by South Korea’s Kim So-hui, 2-14, with the latter aggressively beating the Filipina in the first round.
Pelaez earlier beat Nway Nway of Burma, 3-0, in her quarterfinals bout.
She joins Samuel Thomas Morrison and Levita Ronna Ilao as the Filipino medalists in taekwondo.
Meanwhile, the national softball team dropped landed at fourth place after losing to China (not Japan as earlier reported), 0-3, in the step-ladder semifinals.
The Blu Girls succumbed to China’s superior pitching courtesy of Wang Lan, hitting only three of her striking pitches.
The Philippines currently has one gold, two silver, and five bronze medals to boast good for 22nd place overall.
