Filipinas have yet again written history for Philippine football as the Philippine Women’s National Football Team trounced Bosnia and Herzegovina, 3-0, Friday midnight at Brezice, Slovenia.
The friendly marked the first-ever win by a Philippine national football squad in a FIFA-sanctioned event on European soil.
La Sallian left back Tara Shelton had the privilege of scoring the first-ever Euro goal by the Philippines, and her first international goal, curving a long shot from left wing at the seventh minute.
The goal that hit the top right shelf was a long rebound off a blocked shot from Katrina Guillou.
Towering forward Milena Nikolic, the star player of Bayer Leverkusen, had two chances on goal but her shots were slightly off target.
Defender Darija Djukic also had a chance on goal off a free kick just outside the box but was handily saved by Olivia McDaniel.
Filipina star forward Sarina Bolden then scored on a running attack off a long ball from Hali Long to up the score at 2-0 at the 38th minute.
The world number 63 Bosniaks tried their best to score against the world number 53 Filipinas but the defense line of McDaniel, Long, Dominique Randle, and debuting center back Jessica Cowart held the Philippine goal safe from any incursion.
Bolden capped the win with a sensational left-footed power strike from the right wing at the 82nd minute.
With the brace, Bolden has scored nine international goals, tying with Anicka Castaneda for sixth place in the Filipinas’ all-time scoring list.
Coach Alen Stajcic affirmed the Filipinas’ latest victory as a major milestone, while acknowledging what the team needs to work on for their next competitions. In a statement sent from Slovenia he said, “We toiled hard, pressed well as a group and executed some nice goals.
“Still require improvements in build up play and possession but we are working very hard as we progress on the road to the World Cup.”
The Filipinas debuted in Europe last Sunday in Antalya, Turkey, narrowly losing to world number 27 Ireland, 0-1.
They will face Bosnia and Herzegovina for the final Euro friendly on Sunday, also in Slovenia.
The Euro friendlies serve as tune-up for the Filipinas’ hosting of the 2022 AFF Women’s Cup starting on July 4 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
