Jamil Ortuoste sank clutch treys from the left arc late in the game to lift San Sebastian past Letran College, 85-83, in the main game of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 90 opening day at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The former Staglet scored both of his six points in the fourth quarter on a pair of go-ahead treys, including the dagger with 19.4 seconds left to settle the final score. He finished with 16 points on four-for-nine shooting from beyond the arc.

CJ Perez led all Stags with 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Jovit De La Cruz added 15 points.

The win also halted Baste’s seven game losing streak against the Knights that started on opening day of Season 88 back in 2012.

In the first game, defending champion San Beda College started their road to a fifth-consecutive title with a 57-49 result over season host Jose Rizal University.

Ola Adeogun posted 20 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks to lead the Red Lions, which has not lost an opening day match since losing to Philippine Christian University, 68-50, back in June 25, 2005.

Kyle Pascual, playing in his final year of eligibility, added nine points and eight rebounds, while Season 89 Finals most valuable player Arthur de la Cruz contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and five steals.

The Red Lions managed to stifle JRU’s offensive machine and limited their output to just one field goal in the last 5:50 of the third quarter to push their lead at its apex to 15, 46-31.
