Boxer Eumir Marcial introduced himself to the Olympics by knocking out Algerian foe Younes Nemouchi in Round 1 of the men’s middleweight round of 16 Ryogoku Gokigan on Thursday.

The southpaw Marcial picked his punches and connected on select jabs and straights to start the bout.

A sweeping right hook to Nemouchi’s chin off a three-punch combo knocked the Algerian down one minute into the match.

An accidental headbutt thereafter wounded Nemouchi’s right eyebrow and Marcial exploited this disadvantage, throwing 1-2 combos on the wound.

With forty seconds left, the ringside doctor stopped the match, leading to a techinical knockout win by Marcial.

Marcial will enter the quarterfinals against Arman Darchinyan of Armenia and is one win away from a sure medal.

Earlier, already-ran rower Cris Nievarez drops to the Class F race as he finished at fifth place in the semifinals C/D heat 1 of the men’s single sculls rowing at the Sea Forest Waterway.

Nievarez improved with a time of seven minutes and 26.05 seconds in a race won by Alvaro Torres of Peru, who paddled for seven minutes and 2.49 seconds.

Class F is the lowest tier of the rowing competition.

Nievarez has earlier broke to the quarterfinals but later dropped from medal contention.

At the Kamusigaseki Country Club in Saitama, golfer Juvic Pagunsan has started his Olympic campaign in Round 1 of men’s golf.

Pagunsan started his day with a five-foot birdie in Hole 1 and as of press time is currently at even par entering Hole 5.

Sepp Straka of Austria is currently leading the course with an 8-under par (63) after finishing the par 71 course.
