The head coach of the University of the Philippines men’s football team (UP MFT) confirmed on Saturday the cause of Malian forward Yoro Sangare was a massive heart attack.

Sangare, who skipped Season 85 due to a pre-season game injury, collapsed inside the UP Diliman campus on May 4, a few hours before the final elimination round match between the UP Fighting Maroons and Far Eastern University Tamaraws (FEU).

“They were really devastated, a lot of the players were close to Yoro. Yoro was very, very encouraging, very supportive and I think there was an extra push from the girls to play well for Yoro,” said UP head coach Anto Gonzales after the UP versus University of Santo Tomas women’s football game on Saturday.

Gonzales skipped the UP versus FEU match to attend to Sangare, who arrived dead at the UP Infirmary.

Sangare, a third-year College of Human Kinetics student and a native of Dioila, Mali, turned 22 last April 22.

Having no football tournament in his early years in UP due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sangare coached and trained Filipino children while studying.

The UP MFT announced on its Facebook page that the UP Office of the University President has ordered the full financial coverage of Sangare’s death and funeral expenses.

“We would like to ask for everyone’s understanding to refrain from sending donations to our donation channels. Rest assured that all donations received will be sent to Yoro’s family,” UP MFT stated.
