Playing with a WHS handicap 1, the tandem of Oscar Gallo and Von Vargas representing Lakewood Golf and Country Club won the Class A Champion of the Davao leg of the 2023 Sta. Lucia Tour. Their win gave Lakewood the Overall Champion crown in the competition.

Sixty-year old retired CPA-turned-farmer Gallo from Dipolog finally achieved his dream of winning the championship in the class A division.

Vargas dubbed “Baguio Boy,”  meanwhile, had no formal lessons in golf. He learned to play golf during the pandemic from watching videos.

On Day 1 of the tournament in Palos Verdes, Gallo did most of the work for the two-man scramble format. Vargas contributed several tee shots and regulation shots. Their team made seven birdie putts for a gross score of 65.

On Day 2 at South Pacific, Gallo and Vargas played the Best Ball format. In spite of finding it very challenging, Gallo made quality tee shots, making him the lead in almost all regulation. Gallo complemented one birdie to Vargas’ five.
