Mission accomplished in déjà vu fashion.
De La Salle University, led by co-Season MVPs Abigail Maraño and Ara Galang, swept their way through the Finals against repeat foe Ateneo de Manila University on Wednesday in front of a packed crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Similar to their previous encounter in the very same building, the Lady Spikers took the deciding Game 2 in three straight sets to give head coach Ramil de Jesus and the institution their eighth UAAP Women’s Volleyball crown.
Mika Reyes led the charge with 16 points, 7 of those on blocks. Galang and the graduating Aby Marano turned in 12 points apiece.
In the first set, La Salle weathered a late surge courtesy of Alyssa Valdez to take the first set by just two points. But the Lady Spikers dug themselves a hole in the second set due to their numerous unforced errors, which were capitalized by the Lady Eagles to be just seven points away from claiming the set.
But Mika Reyes had other plans.
The towering sophomore scored five points, including the set-clinching service ace, in the Lady Spikers’ 12-2 run to get within a set of securing their fourth title in five years.
Holding down the Lady Eagles to just 16 points in the deciding third set, the green and white smelled blood and capped off the match on a 11-2 flurry to seal the deal in front of a partisan crowd of the Taft six’s supporters.
Gumabao, for her stellar play during the series, was named as Season 75’s Finals Most Valuable Player.
Alyssa Valdez, who was named Best Scorer prior to the match, led the Lady Eagles with 14 points in a losing cause.
Earlier, defending champions Far Eastern University forced a do-or-die Game 3 after defeating National University in four sets during Game 2 of the men’s division Finals.
Game 3 will be held at the San Juan Arena on Saturday at 2:00pm.
