Khairul Amri’s goal tows Singapore to final round
The Philippines’ second consecutive run to the AFF Suzuki Cup finals has yet again finished to a grinding halt in the semifinals.
Singapore struck gold early in the match to gain their fourth finals appearance via a 1-0 scoreline on Wednesday night at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
Khairul Amri calmly struck home from just outside the box after a free kick against a sleeping Philippine defense in the 19th minute to put the Lion City XI ahead and eventually for good.
After making mid-game adjustments, including the entry of Chieffy Caligdong at halftime and Demitrus Omphroy in the 62nd minute, the Azkals added more bite to their offensive arsenal with more attacks, but they could not get past the last line of defense for a clear shot on goal.
With the hard-earned win by Singapore, the Philippines have now cemented their place as a football powerhouse in the ASEAN region due to their consecutive appearances in the region’s top flight football tournament.
Up next for the Azkals would be the qualification stage of the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, which would be held in the country in March.
