University of Santo Tomas once again claims the top spot in the UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball after defeating defending champions National University, 65-57, Saturday October 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Bulldogs looked like they were about to grab the much-needed win when Gelo Alolino nailed a three-pointer, giving them an elusive and slim 55-54 lead with 4:05 left in the fourth quarter, but aside from a jumper by Alejandro, nothing followed from NU’s side from that point.
Espana’s Growling Tigers regained the lead right away courtesy of a jump shot by Louie Vigil, followed by a lay-up by Ed Daquioag, 58-55 with 2:54 left.
The Altamirano-led squad desperately tried to regain the lead, sorely missing three three-point attempts and two field goals in the remaining 2:43.
UST then calmly shot 6 free throws and went on to win the game.
Both UST and FEU sport an 8-1 win-loss card, another win will assure these teams their spot in the Final Four.
