(UPDATED: July 21, 10:07pm) The wife of Letran College backup point guard Franz Dysam died Saturday night in a shooting incident at the corner of N. Domingo St. and Araneta Avenue in San Juan City an hour after the Knights’ game versus Lyceum of the Philippines University.

Fr. Victor Calvo, Letran athletic director, told Fullcourtfresh.com that Dysam’s wife Joan “expired” at around 8 p.m. at the San Juan Medical Center.

Calvo said that Joan was declared “D.O.A. (dead on arrival)” by emergency physicians. He added that Dysam was stable and conscious, absorbing at least one shot on the chest.

“I’m not sure how many bullets hit him, but I saw a [gunshot] wound in the middle of his chest,” he said.

He added that Dysam will be transferred to the University of Santo Tomas Hospital tonight.

In a separate interview, Knights head coach Caloy Garcia told Fullcourtfresh.com that Dysam was driving back to Letran to attend the team dinner.

“Nakaupo raw sila ni Joan sa harap then sa likod, nakaupo yung anak at stepson nila kasama ang isang varsity player sa high school [Letran Squires],” Garcia narrated, citing initial police reports. The children and high school player were unharmed in the incident, he added.

“I believe this is not game related, Dysam is not a threat to anyone,” Garcia commented.

Dysam, who tallied two rebounds and one assist in nine minutes in the Knights’ 61-53 win against the Pirates, was boarding a Nissan Sentra with plate number ZCA 176.

Dysam was the third Filipino basketball player shot in the past decade.

The last time a basketball player was involved in a shooting incident was in 8 November 2011, when professional cager Ali Peek was shot in the neck in Mandaluyong. On 24 July 2008, then-Far Eastern University Tamaraw and current pro cager Mac Baracael was shot in front of his school along Morayta. Both men survived and are currently active in the Philippine Basketball Association.
