A long dry spell against their long-standing rivals has been broken. In the pre-season, at least.

Kiefer Ravena towed his already shorthanded Ateneo de Manila University squad past De La Salle University in Saturday’s showcase match in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup in front of a packed crowd at The Arena in San Juan City.

The third year guard from the Blue Eagles’ juniors program tallied 31 points, his second-highest scoring output this tournament. Frank Golla, playing through a nagging shoulder injury, scored 12 points on a near-perfect 6-for-9 shooting with seven rebounds. Juami Tiongson added 15 points and collected nine caroms.

This win marks their first win in the tournament in seven tries since the Premier Cup was established back in 2006.

Fresh off a stint in the United States and Japan, the Blue Eagles neutralized every opportunity that their counterparts from Taft Avenue would throw.

Early in the second period, with Ateneo leading by nine after the first, the Green Archers made a 10-0 run led by a pair of treys from Almond Vosotros to get a momentary one point lead. However, that was the last time that the green shirts would taste the lead in the match, with Ravena dousing the fire with back-to-back jumpers as part of his 13 made field goals in the contest.

Eventually, the lead swelled to as big as 20 by the 5:08 mark in the third period on Juami Tiongson’s and-one conversion off a Thomas Torres foul.

Jason Perkins made a living in the post, scoring 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Vosotros and Jeron Teng both finished with 14 points apiece in the loss.

In their women’s division showdown, De La Salle maintained their unblemished mark in four matches following a 75-52 blowout of Ateneo earlier in the day. Ara Abaca scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Nickie Garcia added 10 points for the Lady Archers.

Kat Nunez finished with 12 points, while Cara Buendia scored 10 points and gathered 10 rebounds in the fourth-straight loss of the exiting Lady Eagles.

Meanwhile, San Beda College claimed the third seed in Group A following their 75-68 dispatching of Adamson University in the day’s other men’s division match.

Rome Dela Rosa led the scoring charge with 18 points, followed by Arthur Dela Cruz’s 13 points, and Baser Amer’s 12 points and nine rebounds.

Jericho Cruz amounted for 15 points, while Harry Petilos and a returning Roider Cabrera each had 10 points apiece.
