Co-MVPs Galang, Maraño headline UAAP volleyball award winners

The season’s top UAAP Season 75 volleyball players were honored prior to the Women’s Finals Game 2 match on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

De La Salle University duo of Ara Galang and Abigail Maraño led the cast of awardees as the co-Most Valuable Players for the tournament. Maraño scored a double victory in the individual awards, when she was also named as Best Blocker.

Ateneo de Manila University’s Alyssa Valdez was named as the Best Scorer. Teammate Jem Ferrer nabbed the Best Setter plum.

First-time Women’s Final Four entry National University had the most number of awardees, as trio of Myla Pablo (Best Attacker), Jennylyn Reyes (Best Digger and Best Reciever), and Aiko Urdas (Rookie of the Year) gained four awards. Shiela Pineda of Adamson University rounded out the cast as the Best Server.

University of Santo Tomas’ Mark Gil Alfafara and De La Salle University’s Red Christensen shared Most Valuable Player honors to headline the men’s division awardees.

Alfafara, who is part of the Growling Tigers’ squad that failed to make it into the round of four for the first time since 2004, was also named Best Blocker.

Current finals protagonists National University and Far Eastern University were well-represented in the awards, with the Bulldogs represented by Peter Den Mar Torres (Best Attacker) and Vincent Raphael Mangulabnan (Best Setter), while the Tamaraws had Arvin Avila winning two awards (Best Server and Best Reciever).

Adamson University also nabbed multiple awards, courtesy of Ron Jay Galang (Best Scorer) and Nikko Ramirez (Rookie of the Year), while Carlo Almario flew University of the East’s flag as the Best Digger of the tourney.
