Another epic comeback completed.

Two-time defending champions De La Salle turns the same trick on an age-old rival to come within a game from capturing the UAAP Women’s Volleyball crown for the third straight time.

Similar to their first round encounter, the Lady Spikers came back down from an 0-2 deficit to capture Game 1 in five sets over Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Veterans Abigail Marano and Michelle Gumabao were key in their two-set comeback trail, scoring 11 and 15 points respectively, but it was a wildcard performance by Cyd Demecillo in the deciding set that closed the door shut on the Lady Eagles.

“Sabi ko lang sa kanila na relax lang,” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus of their adjustment during the third set. “Nakapag-adjust sila kaagad at maganda yung naging result.”

Ara Galang, who was consistent the whole match, led the way with all of her 17 points coming from attacks.

Alyssa Valdez, who was Ateneo’s key adjustment entering the Finals, led the Katipunan six with 17 points.

In the men’s draw, National University also made a comeback from an 0-2 deficit to down defending champions Far Eastern University.

Game 2 of the series will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Wednesday.
