National University banked on a rousing second half to capture the 2012 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup on Independence Day.
In front of a predominantly green crowd, the Bulldogs defeated fellow UAAP school De La Salle University by a count of 64-74.
Bobby Ray Parks, who was named part of the Mythical Five, had 10 of his game-high 19 points in the final 20 minutes of the ballgame.
For Parks’ efforts throughout the tournament, he was also named MVP and bested out NU teammate Emmanuel Mbe, Ateneo’s Kiefer Ravena and Greg Slaughter, and DLSU’s Norbert Torres, who rounded out the rest of the Mythical Five.
Mbe, on the other hand, added 13 points and 10 rebounds, which included a surprising three-pointer that deflated the Green Archers early in the fourth. The Bulldogs made 5 of their 6 three-pointers .
Though La Salle led by as much as eight early in the match, the Bulldogs took advantage of the horrendous shooting by the Green Archers in the second half to control the match the rest of the way and wrest away the title from the 2007 champions.
LA Revilla lit up the scoreboard with 14, while Norbert Torres earned 13 points in the loss.
Ateneo de Manila University, on the other hand, bagged third place against rivals San Beda College by a 66-55 tally. Greg Slaughter, the only Blue Eagle in double-figures, salvaged 24 points in the match.
