San Beda College overwhelmingly turned back Colegio de San Juan de Letran in a crucial seniors matchup in the tail end of the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament.

The Red Lions ran over the Knights, 84-68, in a hotly contested battle to decide post-season positioning on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Garvo Lanete hoisted his second round best performance of 28 points with 5 rebounds, while Anthony Semerad led the bench mob with 11 of his 16 points in the deciding fourth quarter.

Despite being held down by the stingy defense, Kevin Alas led all Knights in scoring with 14 points and 5 assists. Jam Cortes pulled together 13 points, while Mark Cruz scored all of his 11 points in the final period that aided a fourth quarter resurgence that was too little too late.

Letran winds up with a 14-4 record entering the post-season and will have to wait until the ties have been settled between San Beda and San Sebastian next week.

On the other hand, the Mendiola five has a golden opportunity at replacing the Stags as the top seed if they would force a playoff on Friday through a win on Wednesday.

On the other hand, College of Saint Benilde slid past Emilio Aguinaldo College by a final tally of 82-73 in order to avoid pinning themselves to the bottom of the heap entering their final game of the season against Lyceum on Monday.

Mercurial rookie guard Michael Pate, coming out of the ranks of La Salle Greenhills, scored a collegiate career-high of 18 points to lead all Blazers in the game. Paolo Taha and Carlo Lastimosa had 14 and 13 apiece, while Jan Tan posted his first double-double of the season with totals of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Jan Jamon led the way with 20 points and 7 rebounds, while Russell Yaya added 17 points and a team-high 9 rebounds for the Generals in a losing cause.

In juniors play, San Beda is a win away from clincing an automatic finals berth with a 1-0 series lead in a virtual best-of-five series after defeating Letran via an 88-63 whitewash. Francis Musayac finished with 16 points, while Antonio Bonsubre piled on 14 points.

Meanwhile, CSB-La Salle Greenhills strengthens their outside shot at a twice-to-beat edge after blowing past EAC-ICA in the day’s curtain-raiser, 84-67. Mario Bonleon had 19 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Thomas Torres and Jon Villaruz with 15 and 13 points respectively.
