Pinay forward Quinley Quezada achieved a new milestone as she tied ex-Filipinas star player Joana Houplin-Michaelson as the all-time top scorer for the Philippine women’s national football team with twelve international goals Thursday in an international friendly against Fiji in Sydney, Australia.
Quezada scored the opening and final goal in the 7-2 rout against the 2018 Oceania Women’s Nations Cup runner-up in humid conditions.
The Filipinas, formerly known as Malditas, surged to a 6-0 first half lead of goals from Quezada, Tahnai Annis, Anicka Castañeda, and defender Dominique Randle, who scored her first international goal.
The Fijians countered with two goals in the second half but Quezada sealed the deal at the 79th minute with a power strike from the central box.
The 25-year-old Quezada, playing in her 22nd cap, was the lone goal scorer for the Philippines’ in its quarterfinals match against Chinese-Taipei in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, where the Filipinas booked their 2023 World Cup ticket after winning the penalty shootout.
Her co-leading goal scorer, Houplin-Michaelson, played eleven caps for the Philippines from 2013 to 2015 and was the top goal scorer in the 2013 AFF Women’s Championship with eight.
The two Pacific squads will conclude their friendlies on April 11, still in Sydney. **
