Filipino-American swimmer Remedy Rule finally cracked the semifinals of the 2020 Olympics swimming competition, as she placed 15th in the heat stages of the women’s 200 m. butterfly race Tuesday at the Tokyo Aquatics Center.
Rule clocked in 2 minutes and 12.23 seconds, which is three seconds shy of her personal best, to book the penultimate ticket in the semis.
She placed last in Heat 3 which was dominated by Chinese swimmer Zhang Yufei, the 100 m. butterfly silver medalist.
Zhang will be the leading swimmer come tomorrow’s semifinals with a time of two minutes and 7.5 seconds.
Rule’s compatriot Luke Gebbie did not fare well in the men’s 100 m. freestyle as he placed 36th out of 70 swimmers, setting a new national record of 49.64 seconds.
Nikola Miljenic of Croatia won in Heat 5 with a time of 49.25 seconds. Gebbie placed fifth in the heat.
Interestingly, Rio gold medalist Joseph Schooling, the legendary Singaporean swimmer, swam with Gebbie in the same heat and placed sixth with a time of 49.84 seconds.
Schooling won Singapore’s first ever Olympic gold medal in 2016 in the men’s 100 m. butterfly event, where he bested the winningest Olympian of all time Michael Phelps.
Rule will swim in the semifinals tomorrow while Gebbie still has his chance in the 50 m. freestyle swim on Friday.
