The Bahrain national men’s football team avenged its earlier defeat against the Philippine Azkals, winning this time, 2-0, in Riffa on Tuesday to notch its second win the second round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers for Asia.
The Reds exploited the Azkals’ lethargic passing game by playing a clogging defense near the goal, which made them more controlling in the second half.
They then saw an opening at the 53rd minute, as Ismail Abdul-Latif struck a goal from point blank range off a short cross pass from Sayed Adnan.
Eight minutes later, Adnan scored on a curving volley off a free kick from 45 yards—a result of a foul from Kevin Ingreso.
Bahrain then parked the bus on the Philippines’ goal, clogging all passing lanes as they were limited to only one shot at goal from Phil Younghusband.
Such lethargic play from the Filipinos was apparent in the first half, as they could only afford three shots with only one—a strike by Younghusband at very first minute—which was the Azkals’ only shining moment for the entire game.
It was all midfield for the Filipinos as they could not execute their plays before the very stubborn Bahraini defense.
The Azkals, coming off an impressive 0-0 draw versus North Korea five days ago in hostile Pyongyang, drops its second game in Group H of the tournament and is still at third place.
Bahrain also won its second game and is half a game behind the Philippines.
The Azkals will next face the already eliminated Yemen team at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila on November 1. Also lined up in their remaining games is an away game versus previous tormentor Uzbekistan and a home game against North Korea slated in March 2016.
