The Micromax Indian Aces, paced by homegrown talents Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles fourth set, scored a 24-15 win over the hometown Manila Mavericks in the nightcap of the 2014 Coca-Cola International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) presented by Qatar Airways.
The duo of Bopanna and Mirza kept the all-star tandem of Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray winless in their second time as partners with a 6-1 win during the crucial fourth set that started with the Aces leading by just one, 12-11.
Following the dominant win, the Aces extended their lead to 18-12 heading into the final singles match.
The Mavericks started the duel on an ominous note, losing Spanish legend Carlos Moya due to a groin injury suffered during the fifth game of the first set against Fabrice Santoro.
Moya had to be replaced by Daniel Nestor, who proved to be chicken feed for Santoro, who handily took the set 6-1.
But in the second stanza, Fil-American playing coach Treat Huey and Jo Wilfried Tsonga took Bopana and Gael Monfils to school with a 6-0 drubbing to momentarily take a 7-6 lead after two sets.
Monfils then battled back-and-fourth with Murray in the men’s singles third set, and eventually outhustled and outplayed the former Wimbledon titlist, 6-4, to give the Aces a slim 12-11 lead.
In the fifth set, Sharapova could not muster the same magic that brought her to victory a day earlier, falling to Ana Ivanovic, 6-3, in the final match.
