In 2010, the Azkals entered the Hanoi pitch for what would be the turning point of the Philippine men’s football program.

Four years later, the Azkals made another history on the very same pitch, in the very same tournament that put Philippines in the map of the football world.

Lightning struck again in Hanoi as the Philippine men’s national football team got its biggest win in ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) history by demolishing four-time runner-up Indonesia, 4-0, on Tuesday night at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.

The win sends the 2-0 Azkals to the home-and-away semifinals of the 2014 Suzuki Cup set on December 2014—its third straight semifinals stint in the biennial meet.

The Philippines steamrolled against the Indonesians in the second half with piercing goals from Manny Ott, Martin Steuble, and unlikely scorer Rob Gier.

The 22-year-old Ott, assuming the center midfielder role from Stephan Schrock, struck a lightning-fast volley from two yards on top of the penalty box in the 52nd minute off a short pass from Misagh Bahadoran.

Steuble followed suit 15 minutes later, capitalizing on Phil Younghusband’s indirect free kick because of Indonesian goalkeeper’s Kurnia Meiga’s error of picking a return kick from an Indonesian teammate. Amid the confusion, Younghusband tapped his free kick to an unguarded Steuble, who volleyed a strike in the 67th minute.

Gier, the veteran center back of the Azkals’ historic 2010 AFF stint, put the icing on the cake with a rebounding strike off his own missed header.

The Philippines opened its scoring parade with a penalty kick from Younghusband in the 16th minute, off an Indonesian foul on Bahadoran within the penalty box.

The historic win was the Philippines’ first against Indonesia since 1934, when the Filipinos edged the then-Dutch East Indies in Manila.

It was also sweet vengeance for the Azkals, bouncing back off back-to-back 1-0 losses against Indonesia in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals.

In Tuesday’s win, the memory of the Philippines’ biggest loss to date—a 1-13 demolition from Indonesia in 2002—was easily buried in the dustbin of history.

This year’s Suzuki Cup is also the most productive for the Philippines, as the Azkals have struck a total of eight goals in two games so far.

But the eight goals came from a revitalized defense line composed of veterans Gier and Juami Guirado, and 2014 newcomers Daisuke Sato, Amani Aguinaldo, and Simone Rota as the quintet made life easy for newbie goalkeeper Patrick Deyto, who deflected only two shots on goal from Indonesia.

The Philippines will next meet home team Vietnam on Friday, 8:00 p.m. (Philippines time), coinciding with the Indonesia-Laos tiff to be held at the nearby Hang Day Stadium.
