Allen Iverson marked his return to the Philippines, not as a player but as the coach of Team Gawad Kalinga (GK) in the PCWorx All In charity basketball game on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
He will be coaching the team led by ex-NBAers Eddy Curry and Demarr Johnson, together with BallUp streetballers Gary Smith, Taurian “Air Up There” Fontenette, Aaron “AO” Owens, Anthony “Mr. Afrika” Pimble, Larry “Bone Collector” Williams, and Grayson “The Professor” Boucher.
“It’s a great opportunity to come out here and help people here. There were so many people who helped me along the way [in my career], so doing something for somebody else is a no-brainer for me,” said Iverson.
On the other hand, Tim Cone will be mentoring Team PCWorx, led by college basketball stars CJ Perez, Javee Mocon, Almond Vosotros, Mac Belo, Troy Rosario, Ola Adeogun, Thirdy and Kiefer Ravena, and Jeron Teng, with PBA legends Willie Miller, Renren Ritualo, and Jerry Codiñera.
Benefitting from the proceeds of the game will be GK Bulaklakin Village in Quezon City.
In his first full day in the Philippines, Iverson visited the beneficiary GK village followed by a mini-basketball clinic conducted by PBA stars Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Harvey Carey, Sol Mercado, and Ryan Araña with Tim Cone.
