
Team Philippines had a medal haul in the second to the last day of the 2014 Asian Games Thursday in Incheon, but none of those medals were colored gold.
Boxers Mark Anthony Barriga, a veteran of the 2012 London Olympics, and Mario Fernandez lost in the semifinals of their respective weight division both by unanimous decision.
Light flyweight Barriga lost to hometown bet Shin Jong-hun of South Korea, with two of the three judges favoring the Korean at 29-28.
On the other hand, bantamweight Fernandez was nipped by Chinese Zhang Jiawei with all three judges scoring the bout at 29-28 in favor of 2010 Asiad silver medalist.
Earlier, Benjamin Keith Sembrano was mauled by Huang Jiannan of China in the men’s taekwondo under-68 division.
The medal haul brought the Philippines to one gold, two silver, and eight bronze medals for 22nd place.
Only four other Filipino athletes remain in contention for the gold medal en route to the final competition day of the Asiad tomorrow.
Boxer Charly Suarez has entered the gold medal match in the lightweight division tomorrow while middleweight Wilfredo Lopez will fight in the semifinals later tonight.
Taekwondo jins Japoy Lizardo and Francis Agojo will also compete tomorrow.
