
The Philippines will snatch two bronze medals in taekwondo as jins Samuel Thomas Morrison and Levita Ronna Ilao dropped their respective semifinals bout at the Ganghwa Dolmens Gym in Incheon Tuesday.
Ilao earlier dropped her semifinals duel against Chinese Li Zhaoyi, 1-5, in the under-49 kilograms division.
The rampaging Morrison meanwhile was knocked out in his under-74 kilograms semifinals match, bowing out in the second round against Masoud Hajizavareh of Iran.
Ilao succumbed to Li, absorbing a head kick from the Chinese as the match in the third round Tuesday at the Ganghwa Dolmens Gym in Incheon.
All of Ilao’s previous bouts were tight en route to her showdown with Li, nipping Vietnamese Thi Huong Giang Doan, 3-1, and Timorese Rosa Luisa dos Santos, 6-2.
Morrison, the Philippines’ best performing jin so far earlier, smashed Akbar Aitakhunov of Kyrgyzstan, 19-6, in the quarterfinals.
Morrison manhandled the Kyrgyz with a head kick in the second round and two body kicks in the third round.
He earlier knocked out Wong Soi Chun of Macau in the round-of-32; and nipped Yerzhan Abylkas of Kazakhstan, 10-9, in the round-of-16.
The other Filipino jins competing today bowed out early in the competition.
Veteran Kristopher Robert Uy bowed down to Chen Linglong of China, 3-5, in the under-87 kilograms quarterfinals, while Nicole Abigail Cham of the women’s under-53 kilograms was mauled by Thailand’s Sarita Phongstri, 0-12, in her opening bout.
With the medals, the Philippines will move up at 25th place in the medal standings with two silver medals and four bronze medals.
